Where did Feb go? – Week 4

All of the great intentions for this month and I have to say my writing has been not met the goal. Is it because I’ve had other things distract me? Is it because I wasn’t feeling inspired to write?

I think it can be said that it was a combination of all these things. Sometimes life happens so fast you have to run to keep up with it. As far as this goal goes I am getting it together and setting myself up for a new month, and better results. I think April would be a better time to schedule in some dedicated writing time.  Well welcome March, I look forward to reviewing what I have done so far, making up some new lists, and taking a break from full month challenges for a time.

Success and Failure – Week 3

I have had a fair share of success this week, but mixed with plenty of failure too. I had to work all weekend so that cut out most of my writing time. Having more of a plan with word count was a real help though, even if I didn’t have time to write every day its much better to be able to hit that small goal and feel good about that.

I’ve also put together a pinboard on pinterest for pictures that inspire me to write. That has helped me keep some focus when I’d rather be cruising around the internet wasting time. Wasting time seems to be a theme of mine this week. I have been so tired I’m going to bed at 8.30pm and the early mornings are really taking their toll.

I have a week off booked for March, I’m hoping that even though Feb was my writing challenge month, I’ll find more time during my holiday to write more. I can’t over book my expectations of myself for this holiday, after all it is only a week. But I will be spending plenty of time on my own so I want to have plenty of things to occupy myself.

I still don’t have one completed chapter. My style of writing seems to flow in dribs and drabs all over the place rather than from the start to the finish of a chapter. Maybe that is a reasonable goal for this coming week. Focus on one chapter and get the first draft written. If I get inspired to write another section the I’ll work on it for the sake of my word count, but my focus needs to be on the chapter at hand.

Challenges, Challenges – Week 2

Can I just say PHEW! It has been madness this week and I have been working my butt off to write as much as I can, and still I feel like I’ve done nothing! This challenge is turning out to be a pretty tough one that’s for sure.

I suppose the part I am having the most trouble is with time and space. With keeping up with my other commitments I only have maybe 2 nights a week that I can focus on writing. And when I finally get to that point I cant find an area to feel comfortable enough to write. The house is always full of people, usually in the living room off the kitchen so its impossible to focus there. And the lighting in the other living space is terrible I can hardly see what I’m doing.

I know that a good writer wouldn’t blame their tools, I should be able to write anywhere. But I get irritated that I don’t have a place I can focus and I have some trouble coming up with what I want to say, having a place for this would make things so much easier.

I think I need to implement a word count goal though. I seem to be fluffing around here and there and not really sure of what should come next. I have also been feeling that not writing very much is not enough and it makes me want to avoid it all together.

Back to basics. I need to have a word count target for each week, possibly broken down into daily targets too so that I can really feel the forward momentum. Then I can review what I have done and decide what area needs work next. I also need to get back on my vitamins! I have been so tired and sluggish that when I have time to write I’d much rather be sleeping.

This week is going to be a better week!

Why is a raven like a writing desk – Week 1

My first week of Challenge 3 has been an interesting one. More often than not I have most felt like writing when I have other things I should be doing. I had an hour before work on Monday when I sat with my notepad and pen, struggling to know where to start. It wasn’t until I had to leave for work that I finally had some ideas that would really work.

It happened again on Wednesday when I was driving to gym. I wanted to write but that time was allocated to gym. Yet when I got home and had time for writing I could think of a million other things I would rather be doing.

I’m hoping that next week goes a little better, although it hasn’t been a total loss. I have been able to catch up on where I left off on my story and I have come up with some great plot ideas to help my story flow better. I just need to write in every spare moment I have, even if its just nonsense, at least that will lead me to writing more and that will lead me to writing more of my story.

My goal for this week is to get my Preface completed. I have a skeleton of the entire story but not one chapter is fully complete and readable. I still have notes in each section of what I want to add and where it needs to go. So look out Preface, here I come!

Fab Feb! The writing desk Challenge

This third Challenge is going to be very different from my previous 2 challenges. This month is going to be all about WRITING!

I am keeping up with the progress of my previous challenges, a healthy lifestyle isn’t the kind of thing you put on hold. I will continue to eat well, exercise, and drink plenty of water. The only real difference is that I will be putting my spare time towards writing!

For the past couple of years I have been working on a novel. I break from writing for months at a time so it should be no surprise that its not even half way complete, if that. My aim and goal is to have the first draft written by August this year. So I figure dedicating Feb to the cause will give me the boost I need.

Due to the amount of writing I will be doing I will be reducing my posts to once a week rather than daily. I am replacing the time I would have spent blogging with working on my novel. You can see from my list that this is one of the tasks I need to complete before my birthday so I hope you forgive the lack of posts for this month.

So bring on February and a fantastic month of writing!
